Background. It has been a long, uninteresting patrol for the destroyer Carmichael. Her task is to make sure no enemy ships pass through her patrol area without being detected and reported.

Intelligence. While in deep space, sensors detected a Klingon warship approaching.

Orders. The patrol orders were to avoid an encounter if possible. The commander of the Carmichael figures that a little action would be a good idea for his crew; so avoiding the encounter is not possible.
